“Stoppard said that the role of Christopher Tiejens was the hardest to get right because of the ‘buttoned up’ nature of his character – the actor playing him would have to repress most emotions whilst at the same time get the audience to believe in him and root for him. Stoppard said that he wanted Benedict to play the part way before Sherlock came along.
