Things I never thought I’d draw #3324

I thought the concerns you raise over Tintin ships in the other post were actually pretty cool because there was a time in my teenage life when I was really into literature of Tintin analysis and the shipping thing seems so so so frivolous when you take the whole of Herge’s work through the scope of a psychoanalyst. Tintin’s a really interesting work because despite its purity there’s something about that “restraint” that harbors a lot of subtext and clues about Herge’s own life. A lot of people suspected he was an misogynistic closeted homosexual because of his bad first marriage, his strange closeness with one of his students (Chang Chongren, who is also a comic character that Tintin is strangely devoted to) and the fact that the series is devoid of women, except for the obtuse Madam Castafiore and all the matronly hotel maids and nurses that show up. I mean think about it? A story about a worldly, prototypic, smart and talented teenage boy who lives in a world of flawed men who all focus on him. Put it that way and it sounds awfully pedarastic.

Unfortunately!! There are a lot of books on psychoanalyzing Herge including a few documentaries but they are mostly in French but there are plenty of bilingual people like me posting their translated learnings online!! I actually attended a lecture during my freshman year of college over his family history (lots of illegitimacy and blue blood involved) and they dissected the comic panels (in French) and it was really cool.
