#3 Anastasia and Dimitri — Anastasia (1997)Anastasia: I feel a little… dizzy.
Dimitri: Kind of… light-headed?
Anastasia: Yeah…
Dimitri: Me too. Probably from all the spinning.
[they stop dancing]
Dimitri: Maybe we should stop.
Anastasia: [quietly] We have stopped.This is the reason this wasn’t “Top Disney Couples” because this is the only movie that isn’t from the Disney franchise. I oft forget seeing as it has that sort of feel — only more mature, imo — and because I often believe that the only worthy animated movies are from Disney/Pixar. But I saw this on VHS at the age of 9 and went around with a sheet tied around my neck, pretending that I was Anastasia. She was my favorite thing for the longest time. And it wasn’t ‘til I was older and rewatched it, that I fell in love with this relationship. The transition from antagonists to love interests was pretty nice. I like that they annoyed the hell out of each other and then there were these moments where you could see Dimitri falling in love with “Anya” and then realizing that he had found Anastasia after all that time and having to give her up (blowing a kiss to the window and walking away after the Empress and Anastasia reunite) is so sad. But he comes back for her, and she gives up her title for him, for love. It wasn’t a happy ending, but a happy beginning as the Empress says.
